Apple is rumored to be developing a new home accessory, possibly a next-gen HomePod, that will run on a software version of tvOS and feature a touchscreen. A recent report suggests that the device could have artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities powered by Apple’s A18 chip, which is also found in the iPhone 16 series. It may also support hand gestures, FaceTime, and other video conferencing platforms, thanks to built-in cameras.

Apple HomePod With Touchscreen Features (Expected)
According to 9to5Mac, the device is identified as “HomeAccessory,” aligning with previous leaks that referenced a new identifier category, “HomeAccessory17,1,” in Apple’s backend. It is said to be codenamed J490.
The new HomePod may be powered by the A18 chipset, enabling it to support Apple Intelligence – the company’s AI suite for iPhones, iPads, and other devices. If this materializes, it would mark the first time an Apple HomePod includes AI features.
In addition to AI, the rumored device is expected to feature a square display rather than the typical rectangular shape seen on tablets. The display may come with a customizable lock screen, featuring multiple clock faces, similar to what’s available on Apple TV. Notably, a tvOS beta update previously revealed references to customizable lock screens with touchscreen support.

The device is also rumored to include an in-built camera, which would support video conferencing apps such as FaceTime. The camera could enable hand gesture recognition, potentially offering a new way to control the device.
Furthermore, the device might offer user identification, allowing personalized requests, much like the current HomePod with voice command support. It may also feature media playback capabilities and function as an AirPlay receiver.
